Africa - High Atlas

Skiing in Africa immediately triggers a number of questions; Are there big mountains? Is the snow really that good? Is it worth it?  The answer to all those questions is yes. Most people in pursuit of obtaining the Ski Africa merit badge tend to fly into Marrakesh and immediately head South to the overpopulated Oukaimeden area where the snow line is high, requiring a fairly long hike in.  If you are seeking a remote experience with incredible terrain and no people then head where the real treasure lies which is roughly 5 hours East in the small, mountainous town of Zaouiat Ahansal which grants you access to the High Atlas’ tallest mountains, topping out at 14,000 ft. This is a stunning, remote area of Northern Africa that makes up the Central High Atlas.  For those looking for a ski touring huts, there are some hidden deep in the backcountry for a multi-day tour. If you are in pursuit of your 7th ski continent, do it right by contacting Kris Erickson and getting access to these incredible mountains that he calls home.
