Grindelwald

Picture a dream mountain resort and it would look a lot like Grindelwald in the Bernese Alps. This village is under the infamous North Face of Eiger, a monumental wall of rock that inspires and intimidates in equal measure. The North Face was first conquered in 1938 and attracts hundreds of climbers every year, which look like tiny flecks as they battle up the rock. For skiers, Grindelwald has it all in one location starting with the access. An easy 2.5-hour train ride directly from Zurich’s international airport and you arrive in perhaps the most dramatic mountain scenery in the Alps. There are a number of great hotels to choose from but Hotel Alpina offers close proximity to the train station, an elevated view of the Eiger, and outstanding food. This was also one of the original hotels in Grindelwald as well. Grindelwald’s ski terrain is expansive with numerous options on both sides of the valley, supported by a world-class infrastructure, which includes the Eiger Express gondola completed in 2020 and is a true engineering marvel. The ski touring and side country options around Grindelwald are exceptional and when the local huts start opening up in March, the itineraries are almost limitless. It won’t take long to realize why the Jungfrau region has the tagline “Top of Europe”. This place is a must for any skier traveler of any ability.
