Silvretta
The Silvretta area is located along the Swiss-Austrian border, just south of the well-known ski resort, St. Anton. The entire massif is covered with large generally gentle glaciers and big peaks, with many fine ski summits. Enjoy a classic Austrian circuit with 1-2 huts and finish with a bender in St. Anton (approx 1-hour away). In the 1920's Hemingway spent a winter here in the Silvretta mountains writing and skiing with his young family. In his day the huts were simple affairs that have since been remodeled into backcountry hotels tucked in the middle of the best touring terrain. Hot showers, comfortable rooms, and home-cooked meals are standard. The skiing is phenomenal as the area holds powder long after the last storm. On any given day you have the opportunity to reach a summit or two without spending too much time out of your skis. For access, fly direct into either Zurich or Munich and enjoy the scenic drive in through the deep valley floors of the northern alps.
